![]() The modifier system makes more sense when you remember that the game was built around the idea that a computer was going to be doing the heavy lifting there.īaldurs Gate 1 is a pretty straight translation of AD&D. ![]() I started playing Baldurs Gate 1 on a lark the other night and during character creation I got to the weapon proficiency slots and was just.fuck that, man. The advantage system is just so much cleaner and faster and easier to understand. It turned complex situations into a lengthy equations. Yeah there was just a ton of situational modifiers applied. Of course, none of us know anything about 4e. I'm guessing there were situational modifiers that got applied back in earlier versions that would apply to the roll? Sounds like a pain to keep track of. My group who normally played 3/3.5 weren't familiar with it when I started asking them to roll with advantage or disadvantage. When did they add advantage? That was a great edition to keep things moving. I really liked third edition, but yeah the amount of power creep got a little ridiculous. What I'm saying is that I think it was dumb of WOTC/Hasbro to not try to bribe CR media into using D&D trademarks given how much good exposure the animated series will be (although CR should have still declined even if they had done that) VOX MACHINA TRANSLATION LICENSEI'm not suggesting any universe where they just decide to use the copyright without asking, there would be a license agreement signed. So Hasbaro could have completely stopped the show if not for how CR proceeded ![]() You still need a license or consent from the original copyright holder. ![]() VOX MACHINA TRANSLATION MOVIEUnlike any D&D movie they're making, it's actually really goodĭerivative works are not owned outright. VOX MACHINA TRANSLATION FULLOn the flip side, Hasbro was crazy to not drive a bus full of money to CR studios to try and get their copyright all over this thing. Right and if Hasbro decided to, for no reason, become copyright assholes like Games Workshop because they want to launch a bunch of crappy web series and charge $25 a month to see them, it would put future seasons in jeopardy or make them weird The story and characters and setting all belong to Critical Role, and that's what the animated series is about. Like, the only benefit would be using spell names or deity names that are in the books. Honestly, it doesn't make sense to tie it to D&D brand-wise, anyway. WOTC has nothing to do with the show and they are deliberately avoiding any copyrights, despite the fact that WOTC would likely let them be used, presumably to maintain creative control of the show no matter what changes going forward That's because Vox Machina started as a Pathfinder campaign before migrating to 5e, but Critical Role's contractual obligations to WOTC/Hasbro means that the series has to be built off 5e from the start.Īlso is Critical Role have contractual obligations with WOTC in regards to the show? For some reason I thought they were playing Pathfinder as of this arc. More recent versions of D&D have moved away from magic items to inherent abilities (this is a bit of a bugbear for DMTuber Matt Colville.)Ī right. Does Vox Machina just not have a lot of magic items? The barbarian couldn't damage the vampire with his normal-ass great axe until the cleric casts holy weapon on it.īut then the knife guy has returning knives and a snake belt. ![]()
